Elevance Renewable Sciences, Inc., a producer of high-performance renewable specialty chemicals, has been named a recipient of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2012 Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Awards for its work using metathesis catalysis to produce high-performing, green specialty chemicals at advantageous costs. The Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge was established to recognize and promote innovative chemical technologies that prevent pollution and have broad applicability in industry. The Program recognizes individuals and organizations on a national level for successfully researching, developing, and implementing outstanding green chemical technologies. Since inception in 2007, building upon a collaboration initiated under a Department of Energy (DOE) grant, Elevance has optimized, engineered, scaled, and commercialized performance products using renewable oil feedstocks. In 2010, the company partnered with Wilmar International to build a world-scale, 180,000 metric ton (approximately 400 million pound) biorefinery in Indonesia, and in 2011, Elevance purchased a biodiesel plant near Natchez, Mississippi, to repurpose as a biorefinery with annual production capacity of 280,000 metric tonnes (approximately 600 million pounds). Elevance products enable novel surfactants, lubricants, additives, polymers, and engineered thermoplastics.
